Doak Finch returns for his seventh season as an assistant swimming coach for Virginia. Finch began his coaching career in the 2000-2001 season as a volunteer assistant coach for the Cavaliers.
Finch was an All-America swimmer for the Cavaliers and graduated from Virginia in 2000 with a B.A. in economics. He served as a quad-captain in 1999-00 and was the team's top butterfly and individual medley swimmer. Finch was named to the ACC's 50th Anniversary Men's Swimming and Diving Team in August of 2002.
Currently, Finch ranks third on Virginia's all-time top times list in the 200 fly (1:43.54), fifth in the 400 I.M. (3:49.60) and fifth in the 200 I.M. (1:47.69). He was also a member of the 400 medley relay team that currently holds the school record and was a member of the 200 medley relay that held the school mark until 2005.
Finch, a multiple-year captain, concluded his career at Virginia as an 11-time NCAA All-American. He was a seven-time first-team All-American, including four first-team honors in the 200 butterfly. Finch was an 11-time ACC champion (eight individual and three relay titles), 1997 ACC Rookie of the Year, and MVP of the 1998 ACC Championship meet. Finch became the 14th individual to win four successive ACC titles in the same event (400 I.M.) in 2000.
He placed seventh at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 200 butterfly. Finch represented the USA in the 1999 World University Games in Palma, Spain, finishing sixth in the 200 fly.
In addition to his coaching duties, Finch is actively involved in recruiting and the strength and conditioning programs for the middle distance, stroke and I.M. swimmers. Finch also serves on the Virginia Swim Camp and NOVA of Virginia swimming staffs during the summer.
