The Virginia swimming teams captured both the men's and women's titles at the Big Al Invitational at the DeNunzio Pool on the campus of Princeton University. Both teams retained the lead that they held after day two in order to capture the titles.
The Cavalier women took first in the six-team field, topping Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Princeton, Brown, and American. On the final day, Jenn Narum (Pleasanton, Calif.) got the Cavaliers started by winning the 1650 free in 16:30.38. In the next event, Virginia got a win from Mei Christensen (Reston, Va.) in the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:57.95. Megan Evo (Beverly Hills, Mich.) took first in the 200 butterfly, winning in 2:03.34. Virginia capped the meet by winning the 400 free relay, as Stephanie Glover (Raleigh, N.C.), Katy Bland (Raleigh, N.C.), Colleen Law (Bethesda, Md.) and Jess Lewis (Allentown, Pa.) finished in 3:23.06.
The Cavalier men took first in the eight team field, topping nationally ranked Tennessee along with Princeton, Pittsburgh, Columbia, Rutgers, Brown, and American. In the first event of the day, John Millen (Lilburn, Ga.) won the 1650 free, in a time of 15:22.05. Vanja Rogulj (Zagreb, Croatia) scored a win in the 200 breaststroke, winning in 1:57.79. In the 200 butterfly, Stefan Hirniak (Highland Park, N.J.) led a Cavalier charge, winning in 1:47.35, with Pat Mellors (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finishing third, Lee Robertson (Waynesboro, Va.) fourth, and Pat Reams (North Easton, Mass.) fifth.
The teams will return to action on January 12 as they travel to Florida.
