University of Virginia second-year swimmer Pat Mellors (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) finished fourth in the finals of the 400-meter individual medley at the 2005 World University Games at Manisa Ö.I˙.M. Swimming Pool Tuesday (August 16).
Mellors, representing the United States, placed fourth in the 400 I.M. with a time of 4:20.87, missing the bronze medal by 76 hundredths of a second. Mellors was the top seed after the morning preliminaries as he clocked a time of 4:22.29. The USA's Eric Shanteau took the gold medal with a time of 4:18.64.
Mellors earned a spot on the USA World University Games Team in the 400-meter individual medley by finishing fourth in the finals of the 400 I.M. at the World Championship Trials on April 1 with a time of 4:21.79. Mellors, the 2005 ACC Men's Freshman Swimmer of the Year, was second after the prelims with a time of 4:22.54.
Mellors earned first-team All-America honors in the 400 individual medley at the 2005 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships with a fifth-place time of 3:45.57. He was an honorable mention All-American in the 200 I.M. with a 10th-place performance (1:46.34). Mellors swept the 200 and 400 I.M. at the 2005 ACC Championships.
