Box Score

CHARLOTTESVILLE - The third-ranked Virginia baseball team scored two runs in the eighth inning to knock off North Carolina State, 4-2, Saturday in the completion of Friday's postponed game at Davenport Field. After a total of two hours and three minutes of rain delays, the Cavaliers promptly put up two runs to break the two-all deadlock, and Casey Lambert (Harrisonburg, Va.) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 42nd career save and become the ACC's all-time leader in saves.

Jake Rule (Waynesboro, Va.) pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win and move to 4-3 this year. Virginia starter Jacob Thompson (Danville, Va.) tossed 6 1/3 innings Friday, allowing two earned runs, six hits and four walks while striking out three. Eric Surkamp (4-3) took the loss for N.C. State after giving up three runs (two earned), three hits and two walks over seven innings. He also struck out three.

Tyler Cannon had two of the Cavaliers' five hits, including a triple in a steady rain Friday right before the game was halted until Saturday. He also drove in a run. Drew Martin had two hits to pace the Wolfpack offense.

The game resumed in the bottom of the eighth inning, as the Cavaliers (39-10, 17-7 ACC) had Cannon on third base with no outs. He immediately scored on a Jeff Stallings wild pitch. A batter later, Jeremy Farrell (Westlake, Ohio) hit a towering home run to left field for his second homer of the season to give Virginia a 4-2 lead.

Lambert then came on and allowed two runners to reach before striking out Dallas Poulk to end the game for his 10th save this season and his ACC career-record of 42.

In action Friday, Virginia took a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning. With none out and runners on first and second base, Patrick Wingfield (Winchester, Va.) laid down a sacrifice bunt, which Surkamp fired past third base and down the left-field line, allowing David Adams (Margate, Fla.) to score and moving Beau Seabury (Mount Vernon, Wash.) to third and Wingfield to second. Cannon followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to push the lead to 2-0.

North Carolina State (31-18, 12-13) answered with two runs of its own in the sixth inning on a two-out, two-run single up the middle by Caleb Mangum. The runs snapped Thompson scoreless innings streak at home at 33 1/3 innings.

The teams will play the originally-schedule Saturday immediately following this game.
