Virginia senior utility player Tom Hagan (Roanoke, Va.) was selected in the 39th round of the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates on the second day of the first-year player draft Wednesday. Hagan was the 1,160th overall pick.
Hagan was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference first team as the designated hitter in 2006. He started 58 of 61 games and hit .357 with 75 hits. He had 41 runs scored, 12 doubles and three triples while adding 41 RBI. He was third on the team in walks (32) and second in on-base percentage (.465) and stolen bases (19-of-22).
Hagan, one of four captains for the Cavaliers, was named to the Cosida District 3 All-Academic team after having a 3.21 grade point average in Systems Engineering. He finishes his career hitting .324 with 81 runs, 158 hits, 91 RBI, 19 doubles, five triples, three home runs, 196 total bases and 32 stolen bases .He played in 156 games and started 136 games.
Hagan joins teammate Mike Ballard as Cavaliers selected in the 2006 draft. Ballard was drafted in the 14th round by the Texas Rangers.
