Player Profile
Position:
Assistant Coach

Experience:
7th season at UVa

Walt Fuller is in his seventh year as an assistant basketball coach at Virginia. He joined head coach Pete Gillen's UVa coaching staff after spending the previous four seasons as an assistant coach at the College of William & Mary.

"Walt is our top assistant coach and works with our big men. He is also our recruiting coordinator, a role which is crucial for a college basketball program," says Gillen. "Walt has done an excellent job as a member of our staff the last six years. He has a terrific future in the game and will make a fine head coach down the road.

"He loves working with the players individually. He was a tremendous player at Drexel University, and being a tremendous player helps you in many ways relating to the college student-athletes of today. He knows when to really get after them and when to hug them."

During Fuller's last season at William & Mary in 1997-98, the Tribe posted a 20-7 record and tied for the Colonial Athletic Association regular season championship. Before joining the staff at William & Mary, Fuller was an assistant coach at Drexel University for six years. In his final season with the Dragons in 1993-94, the team compiled a 25-5 record, won the North Atlantic Conference Championship and earned an NCAA Tournament berth. Drexel also finished as conference runner-up twice during Fuller's tenure and won the regular season title in 1992-93. Fuller worked as a marketing representative for the Philadelphia 76ers from 1987-88. He served as a graduate assistant coach for Drexel in 1986-87 while finishing his undergraduate work and pursuing a master's degree in business administration. He was a financial planner for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company from January until September of 1989.

A two-time captain of the Drexel basketball team, Fuller helped lead the Dragons to an East Coast Conference Championship and an NCAA Tournament berth during the 1985-86 season. He finished his collegiate career ranked first on Drexel's list for games played (116) and was second on the school's career free throw percentage list (80.5 percent). He was voted the team's Most Valuable Player after the 1985-86 season and received the Dragon "D" Award as the squad's top defensive player. Fuller is married to the former Martina Colbert of Philadelphia, Pa., and they have a son, Walt, Jr.
