Scott Shepherd is in his fifth year as a member of the men's basketball program at Virginia. He returns to assistant coaching responsibilities in 2003-04 after serving as UVa's director of basketball operations in 2002-03. He was an assistant coach his first three years at Virginia.
Shepherd originally joined head coach Pete Gillen's staff before the start of 1999-00 season. Before that, he spent five seasons as the head post-graduate basketball coach at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va.
"Scott Shepherd made a big impact on our program as an assistant coach for three years," says Gillen. "He did a tremendous job helping to develop our players and scouting future opponents, among other responsibilities.
"As the director of basketball operations, Scott concentrates on monitoring the academic progress of our players, developing our basketball camps and promoting our basketball programs. He also helps with scheduling our future basketball opponents."
Shepherd's teams at Hargrave compiled an overall record of 127-18 (.876), including a 27-3 record during the 1998-99 season. His 1997-98 Hargrave team had an overall record of 26-1.
Fifty of his player's went on to Division I schools. One player, Korleone Young, went directly to the NBA from Hargrave. He was selected by the Detroit Pistons in the second round of the 1998 NBA draft.
Before assuming the head coaching position in 1994, Shepherd served as the assistant post-graduate basketball coach at Hargrave for the 1993-94 season. Prior to arriving at Hargrave, he was an assistant coach at Ferrum College in Ferrum, Va.
A native of Elkins, W.Va., Shepherd is a 1991 graduate of Robert Morris College with a degree in communications. He played three years of basketball at Robert Morris, helping the team reach the NCAA Tournament twice.
Shepherd is married to the former Maria Welsh of Beaver Falls, Pa., and they have two daughters, Hannah Christine and Sophia Leann.
