Alexis Sherard is in his sixth year as a member of the Virginia basketball staff, having previously served as an assistant coach in 2002-03 and as the director of men's basketball operations for four seasons (1999-2002, 2003-04). He moves back into an assistant coaching position for the 2004-05 season.
Sherard first worked for head coach Pete Gillen as the administrative assistant in the men's basketball office at Providence College from 1996-98. He rejoined Gillen after spending the 1998-99 season as an assistant coach at Binghamton University in Binghamton, N.Y.
"Alexis did a terrific job as one of our full-time assistants two years ago," said Gillen. "He helped recruit Gary Forbes, who we feel is one of our shining young players, and I think he will continue to be a very good recruiter for us. He does a wonderful job relating to student-athletes."
Prior to his tenure at Providence, Sherard was the men's head basketball coach and Dean of Admissions at Lakewood Prep in Lakewood, N.J., for one year (1995-96). He was an assistant basketball coach and admissions counselor at Saint Michael's College in Colchester, Vt., for two years (1993-95).
Sherard received his bachelor's degree in mathematics and education from Saint Michael's College in 1993, and his master's degree in guidance from Providence College in 1998. He played basketball at Saint Michael's and was the team's captain as a senior. He was selected to the Northeast 10 Conference All-Defensive Team as a junior and a senior.
Sherard, who is from Lakewood, N.J., graduated from Lakewood Prep. He was the school's all-time leading scorer in basketball at the time of his graduation and was a McDonald's All-American nominee.
Sherard is married to the former Evangeline Maupin.
