Alexis Sherard is in his sixth year as a member of the Virginia basketball staff, having previously served as an assistant coach in 2002-03 and as the director of men's basketball operations for four seasons (1999-2002, 2003-04). He moves back into an assistant coaching position for the 2004-05 season.

"Alexis did a terrific job as one of our full-time assistants two years ago," said Gillen. "He helped recruit Gary Forbes, who we feel is one of our shining young players, and I think he will continue to be a very good recruiter for us. He does a wonderful job relating to student-athletes."

Prior to his tenure at Providence, Sherard was the men's head basketball coach and Dean of Admissions at Lakewood Prep in Lakewood, N.J., for one year (1995-96). He was an assistant basketball coach and admissions counselor at Saint Michael's College in Colchester, Vt., for two years (1993-95). Sherard, who is from Lakewood, N.J., graduated from Lakewood Prep. He was the school's all-time leading scorer in basketball at the time of his graduation and was a McDonald's All-American nominee.

Sherard is married to the former Evangeline Maupin.
