Chris Colbeck is in his fifth year as the top assistant coach at Virginia. He serves as the offensive coordinator and is nationally recognized as one of the brightest, most innovative offensive coaches in the game today. Under his guidance, Virginia has led the NCAA in scoring in both 1997 and 1999, and is annually one of the most explosive offenses in the country. Colbeck has coached four first-team All-America attackmen, two ACC Players of the Year and one ACC Rookie of the Year during his tenure. In addition to his offensive coaching duties, he is involved in all other aspects of the program.
In January of 2001, Colbeck received the Jay Gallagher Award as the nation’s outstanding assistant lacrosse coach. He shared the award with Kevin Donahue of Syracuse.
“Chris is one of the truly outstanding young coaches in our field,” said UVa head coach Dom Starsia. “He is one of the most honest and hard working individuals I have been around. I have become a better lacrosse coach because of his influence.”
Colbeck came to UVa from Hofstra, where he served as the top assistant under John Danowski. The Flying Dutchmen recorded wins over Hopkins and North Carolina in Colbeck’s one season in Hempstead. Before coaching at Hofstra, he held similar positions at Loyola (1994-95), Princeton (1992-93) and Drexel (1991-92).
Colbeck is a 1991 graduate of Loyola College (Md.). He received his bachelor’s degree in finance from the Baltimore school, earning All-America honors in lacrosse in 1990 and 1991. Colbeck received the Mohler Award as Loyola’s top male student athlete and was an honor roll student. He served as team captain his junior and senior years at Loyola, earning the ECAC Medal of Merit, and he played in the USILA North-South Classic in 1991.
Colbeck is a 1987 graduate of Baltimore’s Calvert Hall College High School.
