Matt Chulis enters his first season as an assistant coach for the Virginia Men's Soccer program. Chulis joins current UVa assistant coach Mike McGinty on the Virginia coaching staff and replaces former UVa assistant coach Richie Williams, who left to take an assistant coach position with the New York Red Bull of Major League Soccer.
Chulis has spent the past couple of years playing professionally. He played for the Long Island Rough Riders last season after spending three seasons (2002-04) in the United Soccer League playing for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Portland Timbers (2001).
Chulis spent time in Major League Soccer playing for the Columbus Crew (1999-00) and the Chicago Fire (2001). Off the field, he served as the Super Y League Director for the Rough Riders last season. Chulis was a student assistant coach while finishing up his bachelor's in sociology during the 2004-05 season.
Chulis played four seasons for the Cavaliers, 1995-1998. He was a three-time NSCAA All-American and three-time Atlantic Coast Conference first team selection. Chulis was named NSCAA National Defender of the Year in 1998. He led the Cavaliers to 32 shutouts in four seasons. Chulis started 93 games and played 8,483 career minutes.
