Richie Williams is in his second season as an assistant coach at Virginia under head coach George Gelnovatch. Williams made his return to the UVa coaching staff after also serving as a volunteer assistant coach at Virginia in 1995 under former coach Bruce Arena. Williams returned to the UVa coaching staff in 2004 with an abundant wealth of soccer experience at the collegiate, national and international levels.
Williams received his bachelor's degree from Virginia in 1992. He played at UVa from 1988-91 and was part of two ACC and NCAA Championship teams (1989 and 1991). He recorded an assist on Virginia's only goal against Santa Clara in the 1989 NCAA Championship game.
Williams tied the school-record for the most assists in one game after dishing out four assists against VCU on September 13, 1989. He is one of 45 Cavaliers to ever record a hat trick (score three goals in one game) and is just one of nine UVa players in school history to score four goals in a single game when he accomplished the feat by scoring four times against Charleston on September 10, 1989. Williams also served as a team captain for Virginia and was named a Second-Team All-ACC selection in 1991.
Following his collegiate career, Williams enjoyed a professional playing career in Major League Soccer and suited up with two clubs, D.C. United (1996-1998, 2002) and the New York/New Jersey MetroStars (2001, 2003). He was also a member of the United States National Team.
Williams and his wife Angela have two children.
