CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - - Sophomore midfielder Nico Colaluca and freshman midfielder Jonathan Villanueva each scored a goal and posted an assist while senior goalkeeper Ryan Burke broke the school record with his 28th career shutout as No. 4 seed Virginia knocked off Bucknell, 4-0, Wednesday night in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in front of 2,083 fans at Klockner Stadium. Adam Cristman and Ian Holder each added goals for the Cavaliers (15-3-1), who advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.

Burke picked up his eighth shutout of the season, but mostly with the help of defenders Matt Poole, Lee Sandwina, Zola Short and Matt Williams, The five held Bucknell to three shots in the game as UVa outshot the Bison, 28-3. The 28 shots was a season-high for the Cavaliers. Bucknell keeper Joey Kuterbach tallied 10 saves for the Bison (9-8-6).
 

 

Virginia struck first in the 26th minute when Adam Cristman took a pass from Colaluca and rifled a shot just inside the right post by a diving Kutterbach putting the Cavaliers ahead, 1-0.

One minute and 13 seconds later, Colaluca scored his seventh goal of the season when Cristman found him streaking on the right flank. He sent in a ball into the goal from eight yards out to put UVa ahead, 2-0, in the 28th minute.

Nico Colaluca scored his seventh goal and added an assist against Bucknell.


Holder put the Cavaliers ahead, 3-0, right before halftime. He headed home a Villanueva corner kick in the 44th minute.

Villanueva made it 4-0 in the 49th minute when he and Yannick Reyering played a little give-and-go. Reyering hit Villanueva on the left flank and he finished his third goal of the season for the Cavaliers.

Chris Hennings took two shots for Bucknell on goal. The Cavaliers held a 10-1 advantage on corner kicks.

No. 4 seed Virginia will now host No. 13 seed California on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
