John Kovach is in his ninth year in the Virginia program and will assist in coaching the goalkeepers. After three years as the Regional Coaching Director and the Regional Goalkeeping Consultant in the USFHA Futures Program in the south region, this past year he was the Under-16 Head Coach and Regional Goalkeeping Consultant in the Maryland & Delaware Region. In 1997, he was named as the assistant coach for the USA Under-19 National Team, which was the 1997 USFHA Team of the Year.
He teaches full time at the Mater Amoris Montessori School in Ashton, Maryland, where he also coaches the Ocelots field hockey team. The Ocelots have participated in the USFHA Indoor National Tournament and the Disney AAU Spring Classic. In 2002, a record seven Ocelots were selected to participate in the U-16 Division of the National Futures Tournament. Four of these Ocelots were also named Junior Olympians. In 2002, two Ocelot teams, an U-12 and an U-16, participated at the California Cup. The Under-16 Team won the Gold Medal and the Under-12 won the Silver Medal. The Ocelots have also produced 5 members of the USA Under-16 Team.
Kovach came to UVa in 1993 after serving nine seasons as an assistant coach at Western Maryland College in Westminster, Md. Prior to his tenure at Western Maryland, he served as the head coach at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda, Md.
A 1982 graduate of the University of Maryland, Kovach earned his master's degree from Western Maryland in 1992. Kovach competed internationally as a member of the 1980 USA Olympic Field Hockey team, the 1979 USA Pan-American Field Hockey team and was a three-time member of the USA National field hockey team (1977-80).
Kovach is married to the former Henrietta Wetz. The couple has one daughter, Sarah.
