Ed Eckelmeyer is in his sixth year as a boatman with the women's rowing program. A retired electrical engineer who grew up in Norfolk, Va., he followed in his daughter's footsteps to UVa. Kirsten Eckelmeyer was a 1998 Virginia graduate and member of the first varsity eight when the team finished third at the 1998 NCAA Championships.
The longtime sculler and his wife Barbara spend the fall and spring racing seasons in Charlottesville. During the rest of the year, the Eckelmeyers live on the water in Noank, Conn., where Ed rebuilds and repairs boats for the Mystic River Rowing Club. He earned his engineering degree from Penn State University and an MBA from the University of New Haven. The team's first varsity eight boat is named for his father, Admiral Ed Eckelmeyer of the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1927.
