Veronika Platzer completed her fourth season as an assistant coach in 2006. She assumed the position of varsity assistant coach of the Virginia women's rowing team after serving as a volunteer coach during the 2002-03 season. She worked with the varsity four crew that won an NCAA Championship in that event in 2004. Since the spring of 2005, she has worked with the Cavaliers' novice crews. Under Platzer's guidance, the novice crews made dramatic progress, culminating with a second-place finish in the novice eight and a third-place finish in the second novice eight at the 2005 South/Central Regionals.
Platzer's previous coaching experience includes positions at Wisconsin and Mercyhurst. She coached the Wisconsin women's lightweight novices to a second place finish at the 2002 Eastern Sprints. The Mercyhurst men's varsity four won the program's first MACRA title and had a fourth place finish at the AVAYA Championships in 2001 under Platzer's guidance. She also worked with teams in New Zealand and Australia, and high school and masters teams in Austin and Dallas, Texas.
Platzer attended Grinnell College where she was a three-time NCAA Division III and Division I discus champion. Platzer was also voted NCAA Female Track and Field Athlete of the Decade (1980-90) for Division III.
After graduating, Platzer began rowing and worked her way to the top, becoming a member of the 1993 World Rowing Championships team. She was also a medalist at the 1992 World Indoor Rowing Championships.
