LAKE MONTICELLO, Va. - The No. 2 Virginia women's rowers won 11 of 12 races at the ACC-Big Ten Challenge on Saturday at Lake Monticello. The Cavaliers hosted Duke, No. 19 Michigan, and No. 4 Ohio State at the regatta.

In the day's final event the No. 4 Ohio State varsity eight upset No. 2 Virginia by a length. The Buckeyes finished in a time of 6:45.8, while the Cavaliers followed in 6:40.9.

Virginia's boat included Michelle Ellison (coxswain), Jenny Cromwell, Katrin Sydlik, Libby McCann, Heather Gardner, Lauren Hutchins, Yvonne Epp, Sara Lippa, and Melanie Kok. Michigan (6:49.1) beat out Duke (6:59.1) in the other varsity eight race.

"I thought overall it was a great day for our program, winning 11 races," Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer said. "It's hard to be pleased when the varsity eight loses the final race. We're overcoming a lot of adversity with injuries. We had to switch line-ups between the morning and afternoon sessions. I expected our kids to step up. We didn't do that. Ohio State did a fantastic job. They beat us. We'll have to go to work."

Virginia's second varsity eight, including Caitlin Mixter (coxswain), Renee Albers, Anna Samaha, Bridget Fowler, Kelsie Chaudoin, Emelia Colman-Shepherd, Augusta Stratos, Andria Haneman, and Rebecaa Ryall, finished ahead of Ohio State with a time of 6:52.9. The Buckeyes came in at 6:58.5. Michigan (7:08.8) outlasted Duke (7:15.6).

Manned by Mary Eddy (coxswain), Mindy Fiesler, Mieke Pitts, Alexandra Clair, and Amanda Chase, Virginia "A" captured its second race on the day in the varsity four race, finishing in 7:50.7, followed by Virginia "B" (8:03.1) and Ohio State (8:07.3). Virginia "C" (7:46.7) finished a full two lengths ahead of Michigan (8:03.2) and Duke (8:20.6).

In the novice eight, Michigan (7:20.2) beat out Duke (8:00.6), while Virginia (6:56.6) finished first against Ohio State (7:08.8). In the second novice eight, Virginia finished first (7:34.4) against Ohio State (7:44.).

The Virginia rowers swept all six races they competed in during the morning session. UVa's second-ranked varsity eight (6:40.8) beat out No. 19 Michigan (6:43.4), while No. 4 Ohio State (6:42.5) won over Duke (6:59.4).

Virginia's second varsity eight won in 6:44.9 over Michigan, while Ohio State (6:46.4) swept Duke (7:03.0).

In the varsity four competition, Virginia "A", manned by Taylor Gilmore (coxswain), Mindy Fiesler, Rebecca Ryall, Alexandra Clair, and Amanda Chase, won in a time of 7:30.7.
