When Virginia had an opening on the coaching staff, Karen Johns had a long list of resumes to chose from, but one name quickly surfaced at the top - Brandon Duncan.
Duncan will coach Virginia's outfielders and will be responsible for coordinating the Cavaliers' recruiting efforts as well as assisting with coaching UVa's pitchers.
Duncan joined the UVa coaching staff in June of 2006 after he spent the prior two seasons as an assistant coach at league rival Georgia Tech.
Duncan grew up as an avid softball fan watching his father, Larry, coach both high school and college ball in South Carolina. He first came to know Johns when she was a player (then Karen Sanchelli) at South Carolina in the late 1980s.
Johns and Duncan first worked together in 2000 at Alabama. Johns was the Crimson Tides' top assistant coach while Duncan was a student manager working very closely with the softball program.
At Georgia Tech, Duncan served as the Yellow Jackets' pitching and catching coach during the 2005 and 2006 seasons and helped guide the team to an impressive 89-36 record during that time. The Yellow Jackets advanced to two NCAA Regionals appearances while Duncan was a member of the coaching staff. Georgia Tech won the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season and tournament championships in 2005.
In 2005, the Yellow Jackets finished 16th in the nation with a 1.49 ERA. Duncan was also responsible for coaching ACC Pitcher of the Year Jessica Sallinger.
In addition to being responsible for the development of Georgia Tech's pitchers and catchers, Duncan was heavily involved in recruiting, game preparation, coordinating team travel, and scouting of opponents. He was also responsible for camp administration, as well as starting Georgia Tech's softball booster club.
Duncan got his start in collegiate softball at Alabama in 2000 as a student manager assisting with the daily operations of the Alabama softball program. Duncan graduated from Alabama in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in history and a minor in English.
The Abbeville, S.C., native also played men's fastpitch softball. In 2001, Duncan toured Asia with "The King and His Court" (a four-man softball team) and was the team's featured pitcher. He was a pitcher for the Spartanburg Stars from 1996-2004 and helped lead the team to three NSA World Series appearances.
"We are so happy to have Brandon join our UVA family," said Johns. "I've known Brandon for quite some time and coached with him before. His knowledge of and passion for the game of softball will be a big benefit to our team."
Duncan is single and resides in Charlottesville.
