CARY, N.C. - The Virginia women's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2006 ACC Tournament with a 4-0 win over Virginia Tech Thursday at the Cary Tennis Center. The No. 6 seeded Cavaliers improve to 13-8 on the season with the victory and will play No. 3 seeded Miami on Friday.

The Cavaliers opened the match by taking the doubles point for a 1-0 lead. The No. 17 ranked duo of Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) and Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) downed Anat Elazari and J.J. Larson at No. 1 doubles 8-4. Douglas Wink (Greensboro, N.C.) and Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) clinched the opening point for the Cavaliers with their 9-7 win at No. 3 doubles over Jessica Brouwer and Ashley James. The match at No. 2 doubles was abandoned.

In singles, the Cavaliers increased their lead to 2-0 as Caroline Hammond (Williamsbur, Va.) scored a 6-2, 6-2 win over Abbey Walker at No. 6 singles. Rachel DelPriore (Williamsville, N.Y.) brought Virginia to the brink of victory with her 6-3, 6-3 win over Elazari at No. 2 singles. Minutes later, Stern clinched victory for Virginia as she completed a 6-4, 7-5 win over Larson at the No. 4 position. The final three matches were abandoned.

The win was Virginia's first ACC Tournament win since 2003, when the Cavaliers defeated Georgia Tech in the quarterfinals.

"I think today was a great win and a good step for our program," said Virginia head coach Mark Guilbeau. "We feel really good about the focus and composure of the team, especially through a tough doubles point. We feel great about the extremely strong process through singles. Just as we have, Virginia Tech has improved drastically this season, and that makes this win an even more encouraging result."

The quarterfinal match between the Cavaliers and Hurricanes will begin at 3:00 p.m. Friday at the Cary Tennis Center.
